Primal Plants Ingredients
Like many greens powder supplements, Gundry MD's Primal Plants consists of a collection of blends, each one containing multiple ingredients. The best greens powders will tell you exactly how much of each ingredient is included in a blend but Primal Plants fails to do this. We know the weight of each blend and based on the order of the ingredients we know which ones are included in the highest amounts but it would be better to have exact information.
Besides this, the overall amount of ingredients included in a serving is very low. At just 4.4g per serving this is less than half the weight of a normal greens powder serving. Considering the fact that Primal Plants is an expensive product and falls within the same price category as many of the best greens powders, you really don’t get much for your money.
Superfood Greens Blend (1000mg)
The Primal Plants’ greens blend contains spinach, broccoli, kale, cinnamon bark, and several other leaf and root extracts. Spinach is a particularly good ingredient for a greens powder as it contains plenty of vitamin E and magnesium. Cinnamon bark provides antioxidants, kale is high in vitamins A, B6, C and K, and broccoli also has a lot of vitamin C.
However, comparing this blend to greens blends in other products and it’s clear that 1000mg is really not a whole lot. One of our favourite greens powders, Super Green Tonik, contains 1000mg of spinach alone, along with a host of other healthy greens.
Metabolic Enhancing Blend (415mg)
This blend is designed to increase your metabolism and help you to burn more energy and make it easier to stay in shape or lose weight. The Metabolic Enhancing blend contains green tea leaf extract, ginger root, white tea leaf extract, bitter melon extract, turmeric, and black pepper.
There is decent evidence that green tea can boost metabolism, and some evidence for ginger supporting weight loss among obese people [1]. White tea leaf extract has been linked to alterations in fat storage effectively reducing the amount of fat the body holds onto [2].
Black pepper is bioactivating, meaning it increases the absorption of other substances. It’s a good ingredient to include, although not directly linked to metabolism. Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory and a couple of small studies have linked it to increased metabolism, but more research is needed to confirm this.
Digestive Support Blend (350mg)
The Digestive Support blend contains just two ingredients: Chicory root fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and bromelain. FOS are prebiotics, they are not broken down in the stomach as so move through the intestines whole. As a result, they feed and support healthy bacteria in the digestive tract. Bromelain is an enzyme that digests proteins and can help to improve the digestive process when taken as a supplement.
Probiotic Blend (3 Billion CFU)
Probiotics are healthy bacteria that can support the body in a number of ways but are primarily involved in the digestive system. Some greens powders include probiotics together with the digestive support ingredients on their nutritional fact sheet, but Primal Plants has decided to separate the two. The three billion CFU (colony-forming units) of probiotics included in each serving of Primal Plants is a reasonable amount but far from the highest of any greens powder. Typically, greens powders with a probiotics blend will have around five billion CFU and the highest we’ve seen is 25 billion.
