Firstly, we should clarify, this is not a review of Nootrum shilajit, we will do a separate write up on that at some point in the near future, it will be relatively positive, but this review is for Nootrum’s “Mushrooms” capsules.
Let’s start with the price point, which is pretty much standard for these sorts of Mushroom blends. At least it would be if Nootrum wasn’t actually at a quality substantially higher than it’s competitors. Yes, this is going to be one of the rare positive reviews we do about a supplement company.
Because the company was kind enough to send us their certificates of analysis (the third party testing certs that most companies keep hidden). We were able to see that they were in fact the high yield extracts that they would have to be for a supplement of this type to contain the levels of phenolics, terpenoids, polysaccharides, glucans, and lectins that you’d need to get the benefits of said mushrooms. We did of course have to agree not to publish the exact details of their proprietary blend as you’d probably expect.
That actually puts their 3 main ingredients at mostly being about 20:1 extracts. That means that they’ve removed most of the none useful mushroom mass and left just the stuff that actually works. And that they've standardized for the things that matter like erinacines.
Meaning that you’re actually getting about as much in these little capsules as you’d get in about 4 servings of most Mushroom supplements. Making it the only mushroom capsule we’ve come across so far that we have actually given a positive review.
And to be honest we don’t actually have much bad to say in our Nootrum review other than the fact that we could only find a few dozen verified reviews on 3rd party review websites from customers, but then again the company isn't particularly old.
Customers Nootrum Reviews
As we said we couldn’t find all too much, we managed to track down 2 different reddit reviews of Nootrum and one comment that was a response recommending them. Other than that there's people talking about the product that don't seem to have bought it, whilst promoting other products in the thread, which is unfortunately a common marketing tactic on reddit.
Beyond that, we did find a few verified reviews on trust pilot and amazon which again were mostly positive. And last up there’s some positive ones on Supp Reviews a UK based website that allows anyone to leave reviews on products they’ve tried. They do have some verification requirements, but again it’s not the best source.
Our testers, of which 2 tried Nootrum Supplements did say that they noticed positive changes to mood, energy and clarity whilst on the supplements. However, this was after the first week of taking them. They did take them for a month and found the results to be pretty consistent. Which again is positive for Nootrum. Obviously some of the benefits of the ingredients take a little longer to see, for example we can’t really test immune improvements over a short period.
Nootrum Ingredients
266mg Lions Mane 20:1 - Lion's Mane has a few bioactive compounds that may stimulate the production of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein that plays a crucial role in the growth and maintenance of brain cells. It’s also been shown to boost immunity, help with mood and even have some anti inflammatory effects. Due to this being a high yield extract (standardized for erinacines, the actual active ingredient) the dose is fine, but normally you’d want 2-3 grams of it when it’s not a standardized extract. [1,2] Lions Mane also has a lot of Beta-glucans which are worth noting for their immune-boosting performance, stimulating the body's defenses against infections and potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
266mg Reishi Extract – Reishi has similar effects to lions mane and again the dosage in Nootrum is all good with it’s extract type. There’s also some extra evidence to suggest it has notable nootropic benefits. [3,4] Reishi mushrooms have also shown notable potential for improving cardiovascular health, with compounds known as triterpenoids offering protective effects. These are also standardized in the nootrum extracts meaning that there’s another benefit in here.
266mg Cordyceps Extract – Cordyceps has the standard benefits most mushrooms claim, although also has a fair few studies to back it’s use as an anti aging ingredient. On top of that recent studies have shown Cordyceps has a pretty strong ability to boost energy levels, enhance athletic performance, and improve respiratory function. They are believed to support the immune system and have even shown promise in combating fatigue and stress. [5,6]
266mg Shiitake Extract - Shiitake mushrooms benefits are mostly as a result of the same beta-glucans we find in Lions mane. Shiitake is particularly rich in these, and as we mentioned they've been shown to enhance the immune system by stimulating the production of immune cells. That’s what these ones are standardized for so, they are well within the regions for Nootrum to be making claims about how effective their supplement is. Another good ingredient. There are also some mild antioxidant effects as Shitake are rich in antioxidants like selenium and vitamin C, although were not sure if you'll get enough in such a small extract. Even if it has been standardized to contain a 10x dose of beta glucans. [7,8]
Proprietary Blend -266mg - Now, we can’t go into too much detail about this as we agreed with Nootrum, but suffice to say there’s more than enough Turkey Tail, Maitake and Chaga extracts in here to be effective when combined with the other mushrooms. Button mushrooms don’t really do all too much in general so we’re not really fussed that they’re a low amount seeing as they’re probably just in here to add another ingredient on the bottle list to look good. [9,10]
Both Maitake and Turkey Tail are notable for immunity effects, again rich in beta glucans and a few relevant lectins and polysaccharides, whereas Chaga tends to have more evidence to support anti aging effects. Although all of them have overlap with improving energy and mood. All in all we're really positive about the Nootrum blend.
Nootrum Review Conclusion
All in all this is our favorite mushroom supplement. We haven’t actually come across anything better in the market, so we’d highly recommend Nootrum Mushrooms. They do also offer single ingredient capsules, but we’d probably not bother with these as you’ll get a lot more for your money and more benefits from the blends.
Whilst this is not a full review for the coffee, we do also rate that highly as it stands. So if you do prefer to take mushroom supplements that way, it’s definitely a decent option too.
All in all, we were very pleased with the product, and that’s not something we normally say.
